A somber evening unfolded at the Bingwa Sacco headquarters parking lot in Kerugoya town, as friends, former schoolmates, and community members gathered for a candlelight vigil in honour of the late Jeff Muchai Mwaniki, a promising young Lawyer who passed away on June 13, 2025 after a prolonged illness that began in November 2024.
The emotionally charged vigil, held on Sunday evening, was led by university comrades, family, and staff of Bingwa Sacco, where the late Muchai had briefly served before his illness. Attendees lit candles and shared heartfelt tributes, memories, and prayers under the chilly Kerugoya skies, creating a touching send-off for a youth many described as brilliant, courageous, and full of life.

Among the speakers was Mr. Kiprotich Korir, a close friend and fellow comrade at the University of Nairobi, who recalled Muchai as "selfless, friendly, and one who danced his troubles away." He fondly remembered how they shared an off-campus apartment, forming a bond that extended beyond their academic life. "Jeff never let the darkness of hardship steal his light. Even when things got tough, he smiled, and that smile lit up our days," Korir said.
Mr. Joseph Murimi, Operations Manager at Bingwa Sacco, welcomed the comrades to the vigil and reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting youth-led activities. He praised Muchai as "a brilliant soul who left a mark on everyone he encountered, even during his most difficult days." Murimi recalled the moment he welcomed Jeff into the Sacco team, commending his "intelligence and work ethic, which remained evident until the very end."

In a moment of reflection and hope, Mr. Maxon, another speaker during the vigil, quoted Matthew 11:28:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
The words rang softly through the crowd as candles flickered in quiet remembrance.
The vigil comes on the eve of renewed Gen Z-led protests expected to begin tomorrow, June 23rd, and run until July 25th, marking the first anniversary of last year’s controversial Finance Bill demonstrations. Those protests saw young people storm the Kenyan Parliament in a bid to reject legislation they deemed oppressive. The mood in Kerugoya tonight was contemplative, with many drawing connections between Jeff’s passing and the broader struggles facing Kenya’s youth today.
Despite fears of unrest in the capital, organisers of the vigil emphasized peace and unity, choosing to honour Jeff’s life not with rage but with reflection.
As candles dimmed and silence fell over the Bingwa Sacco parking lot, one message remained clear: Jeff Muchai Mwaniki may be gone, but his light continues to shine through those he inspired.
